Muscles

Muscles often hold the most obvious signs of trauma.

Protective contraction may develop around areas that feel vulnerable.

For example:

  • the neck may tighten to stabilize the head
  • the shoulders may elevate during stress
  • the jaw may clench to protect the airway

Over time, these contractions can become habitual.

Fascia

Fascia is the connective tissue network that surrounds muscles, bones, nerves, and organs.

It forms a continuous web throughout the body.

When the body experiences injury or stress, fascia can become restricted.

These restrictions may alter movement patterns and increase tension in surrounding tissues.

Because fascia connects distant areas of the body, restrictions in one location can influence others.

This is one reason tension patterns often appear far from the original source.

Breathing Patterns

Breathing is closely linked to the nervous system.

During stress, breathing becomes faster and more shallow.

The diaphragm may stop moving fully, and accessory breathing muscles in the neck and shoulders become overactive.

The nervous system constantly monitors sensory input and determines how much muscle tone is necessary to maintain stability.

Why Traditional Treatments Sometimes Provide Only Temporary Relief

Many therapies focus on the muscles themselves.

Massage relaxes tight muscles.
 Stretching lengthens tissues.
 Strengthening improves stability.

These approaches can be extremely helpful.

However, if the nervous system continues to send signals that maintain protective patterns, the muscles may gradually return to the same tension.

In other words, the muscle is not the root of the issue.

It is responding to signals coming from the nervous system and the structural systems surrounding it.

The Nervous System’s Role in Releasing Trauma

The nervous system regulates the balance between activation and relaxation.  When the system perceives safety, muscle tone decreases and the body can rest.  When it perceives threat, muscle tone increases to prepare for action.

For the body to release chronic tension, the nervous system must gradually shift from protection back toward regulation.  This process often involves:

  • restoring structural balance
  • improving breathing patterns
  • improving circulation and lymph flow
  • restoring mobility in fascia and joints
  • supporting nervous system regulation

When these systems begin communicating effectively again, the body can release patterns that were previously held for protection.
